03.03.09 TAV Airports Holding and Latvian partner capture contract to operate Riga International Airport. A joint venture between Turkish aviation group TAV Airports Holding and Latvian construction company Skonto Buve has been selected to operate Riga International Airport, in partnership with the airport authority. Last year Latvia’s Ministry of Transport called a tender for the development and operation of the airport through an alliance with Riga International Airport Joint Stock Company. TAV-Skonto will provide funding for the airport’s expansion, including a new terminal, and will manage and upgrade existing facilities. Greeting the announcement, TAV Airports Chairman of the Executive Board Sani Sener said: “Our project is important for the whole region. TAV Airports Holding possesses experience of airport operations around the world – due to the system of united management and fruitful partnership with the leading world’s financial institutions. Our cooperation with 300 airline companies will allow us to bring them to Riga, making this city a meeting point between Europe and Asia and a transit centre – a main destination point in the Baltic region.” He said the company was ready to start construction on a new airport terminal by the middle of 2010, putting the first stage into operation by June 2012. The terminal investment will be €200-250 million. Riga International Airport Chairman of the Board Krishjanis Peters said: “[Securing] a private partner, which is ready to invest several hundred million Euros without state guarantees and securities, is an achievement worth admiring. We will continue talks with TAV Airport Holdings/Skonto būve about the cooperation conditions. This project will greatly influence the Latvian economy, creating new jobs and new favourable conditions for the development of related industries – hotels, tourism, transport and others.” In 2008, Riga International Airport handled 3.7 million passengers. Between 2003 and 2008, the compound annual growth rate in passenger volumes has been +39%. TAV Airports operates Istanbul Atatürk, Ankara Esenboga and Izmir Adnan Menderes airports in Turkey, Tbilisi and Batumi airports in Georgia, plus Enfidha and Monastir airports in Tunisia.
